The 5.6×57 and 5.6x57R are high-velocity small-caliber rifle cartridges developed in Germany, primarily for hunting small and medium game such as roe deer and foxes. Introduced by RWS (Rheinisch-Westfälische Sprengstoff-Fabriken) in the late 1960s, these cartridges are based on the 7×57 Mauser case, necked down to accept a .224 inch (5.6 mm) bullet.
The 5.6x57R is the rimmed version, designed for break-action rifles (such as drillings and kipplaufs), while the rimless 5.6×57 suits bolt-action rifles.
